Champions League Preview August 5, 2025 – 5.8.2025

Malmo vs FC Copenhagen (19:00)

Tip: draw or FC Copenhagen to win

Malmo have performed very well in this year’s Champions League qualification and look extremely confident in front of their home crowd. Their attack has been productive, with the team winning seven games in a row, five of which featured at least three goals scored. However, they now face Copenhagen, one of the most disciplined and structurally sound teams in Northern Europe. The Danish champions started the new season in impressive fashion, winning all five competitive matches and keeping four clean sheets. Away from home, they play with composure, efficiency and tactical maturity. If anyone is capable of stopping red-hot Malmo, it’s this side. A draw or a narrow win for the visitors seems very likely.

Dynamo Kyiv vs Pafos (20:00)

Tip: Dynamo Kyiv to win

Dynamo Kyiv enter this stage of the competition with a clear goal: to reach the group stage of the Champions League and make up for last year’s playoff disappointment. So far, the Ukrainian team looks organized, tactically mature and confident – their 3-0 and 3-0 victories over Hamrun Spartans, as well as a league win over Veres-Rivne, confirm their growing form. Coach Shovkovskyi has a strong backbone in his squad: Yarmolenko brings experience and authority, Vanat provides attacking flair, and Buyalskyi offers stability in midfield. While Pafos eliminated Maccabi Tel Aviv, they struggle to finish chances away from home and often make defensive mistakes under pressure. On neutral ground in Lublin, Dynamo should have the upper hand and are expected to build a lead before the return leg.

Shkendija vs Qarabag (20:00)

Tip: Qarabag to win

Shkendija are going through a great run of form. Eliminating FCSB is arguably their biggest achievement in recent years, and the team, under coach Bekjiri, is showing cohesion, fighting spirit and the ability to respond under pressure. However, they now face an opponent on an entirely different level. Qarabag are seasoned campaigners in European competitions, multiple-time Azerbaijani champions, and they play with a mix of attacking flair and tactical discipline. Their experience from last season, where they beat Ludogorets and competed evenly with Dinamo Zagreb, could prove decisive now. Gurbanov has Zoubir and Andrade available up front, and their defense looks compact. Every goal conceded at home will hurt Shkendija, while Qarabag will aim to decide the tie early in Tetovo.

Rangers vs Viktoria Plzen (20:45)

Tip: Rangers to win

Rangers are once again looking to return to the elite of European football, and the qualification phase offers the ideal platform to do so. They’ve already taken the first step – eliminating Panathinaikos in a tactically impressive manner, especially with a 2-0 win at home that showcased their strengths. Back at Ibrox, they are expected to dominate possession again, and if they convert their chances efficiently, they can establish a solid advantage. Viktoria Plzen did show character in coming back against Servette, but they currently face squad problems – notably the absence of Zeljkovic and the departure of Pavel Sulc. Miroslav Koubek will rely on Vydra’s experience and Durosinmi’s youthful energy, but the pressure of the Glasgow crowd and the overall quality of the home side will likely tilt the match in Rangers’ favour.
