Tip: Livingston to win
Livingston returned to the Premiership after a successful play-off campaign and carried their positive form into the cup and the opening league match, where they managed to come back from two goals down against Kilmarnock. They have won each of the last three head-to-head meetings and have held the upper hand over Falkirk for a long time. The visitors may have won last season’s Championship, but they have failed to win any of their last seven games against Livingston and are missing several key first-team players. The hosts can also rely on Muirhead’s scoring form and the advantage of playing at home, where they should dictate the pace.
Tip: St Mirren to win
St Mirren have a stable core of players and continue their successful recent years, regularly finishing in the top half of the table. They played an even match against Celtic and only conceded in the 87th minute, which shows strong defensive organisation. Motherwell, under their new manager, may not lose often, but they have long struggled to score goals and will go into this match without several injured key players. The hosts are also very strong at home and can use the support of the crowd to put pressure on their opponents.
Tip: Rangers to win
Rangers have a clear goal to make up for their slip-up in the opening round against Motherwell and to build on their dominant Champions League qualifying performance against Plzen. Coach Martin made bold changes to the line-up, which paid off, and against Dundee he is expected to field the attacking trio of Gassama–Dessers–Antman again. Dundee lost to Hibernian in the league after a very poor performance and have failed to win any of their last 17 matches against Rangers. The gap in squad quality and current form is heavily in favour of the hosts.
Tip: Celtic to win
Celtic are the reigning champions and showed their strength right from the first round, managing to decide the match late on against St Mirren despite struggling for much of the game. They have a long-standing positive record against Aberdeen and have not lost a league match there since 2016. Aberdeen started the season with a defeat to Hearts and have yet to build on their cup final success, where they beat Celtic on penalties. The higher quality squad, deeper bench and established playing patterns should bring the Bhoys three points.
Tip: Hearts to win
Hearts are currently in exceptional form with eleven consecutive victories, during which they have scored 24 goals and conceded only twice. In the opening round they outplayed Aberdeen and confirmed they can dominate even away from home. Dundee United may be unbeaten, but their performances fluctuate and they face a busy schedule due to European fixtures. The recent head-to-head record is also in Hearts’ favour, which strengthens their chances.
Tip: Hibernian to win
Hibernian started the season with a win over Dundee and then confirmed their form in Europe against Partizan. Boyle and Bowie are in good attacking form and can decide matches with individual quality. Kilmarnock squandered a two-goal lead against Livingston and were weakened by a red card; on Sunday they will be without Stanger and possibly other first-team players. Hibs have better current form and squad quality, and at home they are the favourites.
