English Championship Matchday 1 Preview (August 8–10, 2025) – 8.-10.8. 2025

Birmingham City vs Ipswich Town (08.08.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Birmingham City to win

Birmingham enters the season with fresh energy after a record League One campaign (111 points) and has significantly strengthened the squad with both experience and pace (Gray, Doyle, Osayi-Samuel, Neumann). They wrapped up pre-season with a 1-0 win over Nottingham and last year turned their home ground into a fortress (undefeated in League One). Ipswich, following relegation, is reshaping the squad and lost key players (e.g., Morsy, Delap), although the arrivals of Matusiwa and Kipré make sense on paper. A run of pre-season wins will give the visitors confidence, but the injury situation among wingers and full-backs (Townsend out, Burns and Clarke missing; Davis/Philogene doubtful) limits McKenna’s options. Ipswich has also failed to win in seven consecutive visits to St Andrew’s since 2012. The combination of home form, squad depth, and better overall momentum favours the Blues.

Charlton Athletic vs Watford (09.08.2025, 13:30)

Tip: Draw

Charlton, promoted through the play-offs, enjoyed a solid pre-season (4 wins from 6) and added more attacking variety (Kelman, Knibbs, Olaofe). The squad looks compact, with no major absences, and home advantage should help them adapt to the faster pace of the Championship. Watford under Pezzolano went through a rational rebuild, bringing in both young talent and reliable players (e.g., Irankunda), and their pre-season was stable in terms of results (WDDW). A long competitive break often evens things out, and early rounds tend to be more cautious. Historical head-to-heads are dated and don’t offer a clear pattern for this scenario. We expect a balanced match with a realistic share of points.

Coventry City vs Hull City (09.08.2025, 13:30)

Tip: Coventry City to win

Coventry is coming off another season with a strong finish, and with Lampard at the helm, they maintain high ambitions and a clear game identity. The core of the team remains intact, and although a few players have minor injury concerns (e.g., Rudoni), the structure is clear and functional. Hull fought relegation last year but has brought in some interesting profiles (McBurnie, Destan) over the summer, though some signings may not yet be ready for full match load. Pre-season results were encouraging for the Tigers, but facing a well-organised and hard-running Coventry away is always tough. The hosts are used to dictating the tempo through midfield and transitions down the flanks. All factors combined give the Sky Blues the edge.

Southampton vs Wrexham (09.08.2025, 13:30)

Tip: Southampton to win

The Saints begin a new era under Will Still, and the squad has both the quality and depth to push immediately for promotion. In pre-season they showed character and productivity in late stages, signalling a strong mentality after a difficult campaign. Wrexham has momentum, passionate support, and strong signings (Coady, Moore, O’Brien), but the leap to Championship promotion level is big. The visitors’ pre-season was inconsistent, and their defensive partnerships are still finding cohesion. At St Mary’s, Southampton is typically more aggressive in pressing and can keep newly promoted teams pinned in their own third for long spells. We expect them to control proceedings and secure a home win.

Middlesbrough vs Swansea City (09.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Draw

Boro, after a poor finish, is changing direction under Rob Edwards, but summer signings have mainly been in structural positions, and the striker role remains a question. Pre-season results have been modest (more draws, no winning rhythm), suggesting the team is still adapting to the new setup. Swansea begins under Alan Sheehan, with modest signings and an ongoing search for consistent goal output. We expect a tactical battle focusing on ball security and set pieces. Early rounds also tend to see higher error rates in the final third. A share of points looks the most likely outcome.

Norwich City vs Millwall (09.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Norwich not to lose (1X)

Norwich overhauled their squad during the summer and, under Manning, will look for structured build-ups and quick wing transitions. Mixed pre-season results don’t change the fact that the individual quality up front (Sargent, new arrivals behind him) can decide matches. Millwall had a strong end to pre-season (four straight wins) and brought in useful depth as well as a new striker. However, they have long struggled at Carrow Road, where the home side’s tempo and combination play often cause problems. The opener could be tight, hence our choice of 1X cover. Goals are likely to be limited, with an emphasis on set pieces.

Oxford United vs Portsmouth (09.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Portsmouth not to lose (X2)

Oxford enters their second season back in the Championship aiming for early safety but is dealing with several absences in both defence and attack, with some offensive players not fully fit. Their pre-season performances were decent, but they tend to make transition mistakes when facing high pressing. Portsmouth retained their core, added creativity in midfield (Swift), and improved results over pre-season (unbeaten in six). Even without Bishop, Pompey has solid attacking patterns and can control rhythm through the second wave. Recent head-to-heads favour them. We therefore opt for the conservative X2.

Queens Park Rangers vs Preston North End (09.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: QPR to win

QPR starts under Julien Stephan and has a positive home record against Preston (four straight wins, both games 2-1 last season). They have added pace and one-on-one quality on the wings and will want to press high. Preston has lost key players (Riis, Woodman) and won just one of five pre-season matches, showing they are still building a new core. PNE’s defence struggles with rotations between lines and runs behind full-backs, something QPR can exploit. An early home push should create chances straight from kick-off. We side with the R’s.

Stoke City vs Derby County (09.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Stoke City to win

Stoke heads into the season buoyed by pre-season wins, including a notable victory over Burnley, and has balanced experience (Cresswell) with dynamism (Mubama). Their play looked more compact, with better midfield protection and quicker attacking transitions. Derby fought relegation last year, and while summer results weren’t bad, injuries and player availability limit Eustace’s tactical options. New forwards still need time to build chemistry, which usually affects attacking rhythm and movement patterns. At the Bet365 Stadium, Stoke is more direct and strong from set pieces. The hosts should take all three points.

West Bromwich Albion vs Blackburn Rovers (09.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Blackburn not to lose (X2)

West Brom struggled last season with too many draws and begins this campaign without key attacking options (Dike out, Maja likely out), reducing their penalty box threat. Although the squad core remains, the final third may lack sharpness early on. Blackburn has a good long-term record against the Baggies and comes in after a strong pre-season. Ismaël’s side is physically demanding for opponents and presses full-backs’ first passes well. We expect a close game with a slight tactical edge for the visitors in transitions. Hence, the X2 cover.

Sheffield United vs Bristol City (09.08.2025, 18:30)

Tip: Sheffield United to win

The Blades, after finishing third and comfortably beating the same opponent in the play-off semi-final (6-0 aggregate), aim to set a high bar again. Under new coach Selles, they’ve added smart profiles and continue last season’s flexibility between 4-3-3 and 3-4-3. Bristol City starts under Struber, and although the squad core remains, the coaching change and role adjustments will take time. At Bramall Lane, the hosts traditionally suffocate midfield and overload the flanks with quick exchanges. In early rounds, press triggers and set pieces are often decisive, and Sheff Utd holds the advantage. A home win is the logical call.

Leicester City vs Sheffield Wednesday (10.08.2025, 17:30)

Tip: Leicester City to win

After relegation from the Premier League, Leicester went through a reset but regained confidence in pre-season and will want to establish dominance at home from the first round. Cifuentes emphasises structured build-up and wing speed, which usually results in many box entries against weaker opposition. Wednesday faces serious off-field issues, a thin squad, and high player turnover, reducing in-game flexibility. Although they managed some pre-season results, the intensity and quality at King Power are a level above. Leicester also has several individuals capable of deciding matches on their own. We expect a clear performance and three points for the Foxes.
