Champions League Preview August 12, 2025 – 12.8.2025

Qarabag FK vs Shkendija (18:00)

Tip: Qarabag win

Qarabag brought a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg, but they were the better side in terms of play and confirmed their good form – it is already their third consecutive match without conceding a goal. The Azerbaijani champion has long held a positive record against Macedonian opponents and has experience with decisive matches for qualification. The home environment in Baku is usually a big advantage, although statistics from recent years in the Champions League suggest it is not an unbreachable fortress. Shkendija often struggles away from home in Europe and in the past has found it difficult to succeed on the pitches of stronger opponents. A combination of solid defence and experience in similar matches gives Qarabag a real chance to seal qualification with a win.

Copenhagen vs Malmo (19:00)

Tip: Copenhagen win

After a goalless draw in the first leg, Copenhagen has the advantage of playing at home, where they comfortably defeated Drita in this year’s qualification. Despite a 2-3 league loss to Aarhus, the team has a stable defence, which had kept five consecutive clean sheets before that match. Malmo may play well away, but they head into the return leg after dropping points to Mjällby and are already significantly behind in the league. The home team has a deeper squad, Champions League experience, and traditionally applies pressure at Parken, forcing opponents into mistakes. If Copenhagen maintains defensive concentration, they should secure qualification with a win.

Fenerbahce vs Feyenoord (19:00)

Tip: Fenerbahce win

Fenerbahce must overturn a 1-2 deficit from Rotterdam at home and will rely on the fiery atmosphere in Istanbul. Mourinho has a rested team at his disposal thanks to a postponed league match and can bet on the attacking strength of players like En-Nesyri, Duran and Szymanski. Feyenoord will arrive with a weakened defence – missing four centre-backs and the left-back, which could be a key factor. Although the Dutch have a quality midfield and attack, they have struggled in recent years in European away matches and last kept a clean sheet away from home in Europe over 20 years ago. Motivation, home support and the absence of Feyenoord’s key defenders favour a Turkish victory.

Pafos FC vs Dynamo Kyiv (19:00)

Tip: Dynamo Kyiv win

Pafos may have the advantage after a 1-0 away win and a long unbeaten run, but Dynamo Kyiv has a more experienced squad and the quality needed for a comeback. The Ukrainians showed their attacking strength at the weekend in a 5-1 win over Rukh Lviv and can rely on leaders such as Yarmolenko, Shaparenko and Vanat in key moments. Pafos is a newcomer at this stage of the Champions League and the pressure to hold on against such an opponent could be a big challenge. Dynamo will play actively from the start to erase the deficit, and if they convert their chances, they have a great chance to leave Cyprus with a win and force extra time or secure qualification.

Viktoria Plzen vs Rangers (19:00)

Tip: Rangers win

Rangers travel to Plzen with a 3-0 first-leg lead and, despite domestic league setbacks, they look very assured in Europe. The Scottish side relies on the attacking trio Gassama–Dessers–Antman, which was key to success in Glasgow. Plzen has already turned around an unfavourable result in Europe this year against Servette, but this time they face a stronger opponent with experience in tough away matches. Although the home side may play more freely and take risks, the gap in squad quality and current form is evident. Rangers should confirm qualification with a win on Czech soil.

Club Brugge vs Red Bull Salzburg (19:30)

Tip: Club Brugge win

The Belgian runner-up brings a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg thanks to a late Vermant goal and has the chance to confirm qualification at home. Brugge have started the season very well – four wins from five competitive matches, with the last two without conceding a goal. The team can rely on experienced Vanaken and dangerous winger Tzolis, who can capitalise on any opponent’s mistake. Salzburg may have crushed Grazer AK 5-0 at the weekend, but they have long struggled with consistency and will enter the return leg without several key players. In the Belgian environment, where Brugge regularly performs well in big matches, the home side should confirm their quality with a win.

Ferencvaros vs Ludogorets (20:15)

Tip: Ferencvaros win

After a goalless draw in Bulgaria, Ferencvaros has the advantage of playing at home, where they have won all three competitive matches this season, scoring nine goals in total. Under Robbie Keane, the Hungarian champion plays offensively and takes early leads, which could be the key against an opponent who had to decide previous rounds in extra time. Ludogorets may have experience and the ability to defend, but they often lose ground away from home in Europe. The combination of Ferencvaros’s home form and fan support in Budapest should be the decisive factor for a home win.

Slovan Bratislava vs Kairat (20:15)

Tip: Slovan Bratislava win

Slovan needs to overturn a 0-1 loss from Almaty and has a good starting position – at Tehelné pole they have won their last four competitive matches, including a clear 4-0 victory over Zrinjski. Although Kairat has kept clean sheets at home in this qualification, they have already conceded goals away and will find it difficult against an organised and experienced opponent like Slovan. The Slovak champion can rely on forwards Strelec and Barseghyan, who regularly decide important home matches. With a packed stadium behind them, Slovan has a real chance not only to qualify but also to win the return leg.

Benfica vs Nice (21:00)

Tip: Benfica win

Benfica holds a comfortable 2-0 away lead and is highly motivated to finish the tie with a home victory. The Portuguese champion has made a successful start to the season, winning the Super Cup against Sporting and maintaining a run of 21 consecutive matches with a goal scored. Nice, on the other hand, is troubled by injuries and the departure of key players, and has long failed to impress away in Europe. In Lisbon, Benfica is traditionally very strong, combining quick attacking transitions with a solid defence, and against a weakened opponent they should confirm qualification with another win.

Red Star Belgrade vs Lech Poznan (21:00)

Tip: Red Star Belgrade win

Crvena zvezda brought back a 3-1 win from Poland and at home are among the most dominant teams in Europe – they have won 13 of their last 14 competitive home matches. The Serbian champion boasts dangerous attackers such as Krunic, Ivanic and Duarte, who can decide a match within minutes. Lech Poznan may have a decent away record, but the difference in quality and experience is obvious. Moreover, the Poles are dealing with injuries in midfield, which could be fatal against an aggressive and technically strong Crvena zvezda. A clear home win is expected in Belgrade.
