English League One Round 1 Preview (August 1–2, 2025) – 1.-2.8. 2025

Luton Town vs AFC Wimbledon (01.08.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Luton Town to win

Luton enter the season with a clear goal of returning to the Championship immediately, and their preseason results suggest they're on the right track. Under Matt Bloomfield, the team secured four wins, including an emphatic 8-1 victory over Slovenian side Triglav, and kept a clean sheet against Tottenham in their final warm-up match. The club has brought in several experienced EFL players like Kal Naismith and George Saville. In contrast, newly promoted Wimbledon head into League One with many doubts – they lost their last three preseason matches, including a defeat to non-league Southend. Their squad appears inexperienced and defensively fragile. Given the difference in quality, form, and home advantage, a Luton win looks highly likely.

Cardiff City vs Peterborough United (02.08.2025, 13:00)

Tip: Cardiff City to win

Although Cardiff haven’t made any summer signings, they still have a squad strong enough to compete at the top of League One. Under new manager Barry-Murphy, the team went unbeaten in preseason and showed good organization and cohesion. Despite missing Calum Chambers and Perry Ng, the core of the team remains intact. On the other side, Peterborough have undergone major changes after last season, losing key players. While new faces have arrived, their chemistry remains unproven. The visitors also have a traditionally poor away record. Cardiff’s home advantage and greater stability should prove decisive in the season opener.

Blackpool vs Stevenage (02.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Blackpool to win

Blackpool enjoyed a very solid preseason, going unbeaten and defeating sides like West Bromwich Albion. Managed by the experienced Steve Bruce, the team has added quality across the pitch – in goal, defence and midfield – bolstering their playoff ambitions. They’ve been strong at Bloomfield Road in recent years. Stevenage, on the other hand, showed inconsistent preseason form, alternating wins and losses, and their away performances remain unconvincing. While they’ve made some signings, they are likely to need time to gel. Given Blackpool’s current form, squad depth and home advantage, they are rightful favourites in this match.

Bradford City vs Wycombe Wanderers (02.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Draw

Bradford return to League One full of determination and positive momentum after a strong preseason, winning four and drawing two matches, including a victory over Middlesbrough. New signings like Humphrys and Swan add freshness and quality up front. Wycombe possess an experienced squad, but under manager Dodds they were inconsistent at the end of last season. Despite some squad turnover, they remain competitive, as shown by their draw with Tottenham. Bradford’s home form and promotion euphoria could balance out Wycombe’s experience. A close and balanced match is expected, with a draw a realistic outcome.

Burton Albion vs Mansfield Town (02.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Draw

Burton narrowly avoided relegation once again and, despite three preseason wins, their overall playing style remains conservative. Their defence is solid, but the attack lacks punch. Mansfield enjoyed a successful first season back in League One thanks to their decent goal-scoring, but struggled away from home – winning only once in their final 11 away matches. Both sides drew twice against each other last season, and neither has shown enough to be clear favourites. A hard-fought, even contest is expected, likely ending in another draw.

Doncaster Rovers vs Exeter City (02.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Doncaster Rovers to win

Doncaster start the new season with a winning mentality after claiming the League Two title and look well-prepared under Grant McCann. They played six preseason matches, winning four and drawing two, scoring 19 goals in the process. Their attacking trio of Sharp, Molyneux and Gibson is well-drilled and dangerous, and the team ended last season with a strong winning run. While Exeter were also unbeaten in preseason, their away form is historically poor – they lost nearly half their road matches last season. The team lacks consistency and might struggle in early games. With solid home form, attacking power and strong momentum, Doncaster are clear favourites.

Lincoln City vs Reading (02.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Lincoln City to win

Lincoln showed great stability throughout preseason, going unbeaten and finishing with a morale-boosting 4-2 win over West Bromwich Albion. The core of the team remains intact, and new defenders Towler and Bradley should further solidify the back line. Reading, in contrast, had a disappointing preseason, winning only once and suffering a heavy 0-4 defeat to Portsmouth. The squad has undergone significant changes, and although some promising signings arrived – like Burns from Manchester City – the lack of cohesion might be a problem early on. With home advantage, recent form and two league wins over Reading last season, Lincoln are strong favourites here.

Plymouth Argyle vs Barnsley (02.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Draw

Plymouth are looking for a quick return to the Championship after relegation, but the squad has been heavily reshaped, with many new faces expected to start. Although the club is among the promotion favourites, the coaching change and the squad rebuild could lead to early inconsistency. Barnsley had a mediocre season last year, but showed solid form in preseason – suffering just one defeat in five matches. Despite their own changes, their squad appears more settled and experienced at this level. Given Plymouth’s current transitional phase and Barnsley’s stability, a close and balanced match ending in a draw seems likely.

Wigan Athletic vs Northampton Town (02.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Wigan Athletic to win

Wigan finished last season with a solid defensive record and showed improved attacking play during preseason, going unbeaten. The club made a key signing in experienced striker Paul Mullin, who could significantly boost their scoring output. Northampton are among the favourites for relegation based on preseason predictions. Their summer form was mixed, and injuries have weakened the squad. Wigan have historically done well in head-to-head matchups, and with a better squad and current form, they should be able to start the season strongly with a home win.

Stockport County vs Bolton Wanderers (Aug 3, 2025 1:00pm)

Tip: Stockport County to win

Stockport enter the new League One season with high ambitions and a strong home record – under coach Challinor, they went unbeaten in their final 11 home games last season. Although they suffered playoff heartbreak against Leyton Orient, the club has shown consistent progress in recent years, aiming to return to the Championship for the first time since 2002. The squad has been reinforced with Jamaican striker Malik Mothersille and experienced Finnish defender Arttu Hoskonen. While Bolton won five out of five preseason games, they ended last season with only two points from their final six league fixtures. Moreover, Stockport dominated their head-to-head clashes last year, winning 5–0 at home and 1–0 away. Bolton begin the campaign under new coach Steven Schumacher with a heavily rotated squad, which might still be finding its rhythm. Given Stockport's home form and squad stability, a home win looks highly probable.
