Ligue 1 Matchday 4 Preview (September 12–14, 2025) – 12.-14.9. 2025

Marseille vs Lorient (12.09.2025, 20:45)

Tip: Marseille to win

Marseille return to the Stade Vélodrome after the international break with a clear objective – to correct their slow start to the season and re-establish themselves among the teams fighting for European spots. Roberto De Zerbi is still looking for the ideal lineup, but their home record is impressive – eight wins from their last nine Ligue 1 games speak volumes. One of the key talking points could be the debut of Benjamin Pavard, who is expected to bring much-needed stability and experience to the back line. Although Marseille have struggled in attack during the opening rounds, they are usually a prolific side at home, scoring at least three goals in each of their last five Ligue 1 matches at the Vélodrome. Lorient arrive after a crushing 7-1 defeat to Lille and will be eager to restore some pride, but their run of five consecutive away losses does not inspire confidence. Their main attacking threat will be Tosin Aiyegun, who has already scored twice this season, but Lorient’s tendency to concede late and drop off physically in the second half could prove costly. Marseille have the perfect opportunity to bounce back and delight their home supporters. For that reason, we are backing a home win.

Nice vs Nantes (13.09.2025, 17:00)

Tip: Under 2.5 goals

Nice return to the Allianz Riviera, where they have been consistently strong, and their matches tend to be cagey affairs. Franck Haise’s side rarely concede at home – in fact, they have let in no more than one goal in each of their last five league games here – and they focus on controlling the tempo and shutting down opposition chances. Even without veteran leader Dante, Nice have enough quality in defence to keep opponents quiet. Nantes, meanwhile, are the least productive attacking side in Ligue 1 so far with just one goal scored, though coach Luis Castro has built a solid defensive structure that has only conceded twice. Head-to-head history suggests a tight battle, with Nantes unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Nice, including several narrow wins away from home. It is highly likely that the opening goal will have a decisive impact on the match, and goals may be hard to come by overall. Considering both teams’ defensive strengths and lack of offensive output, we are going for under 2.5 goals.

Auxerre vs Monaco (13.09.2025, 21:05)

Tip: Both teams to score (BTTS)

Auxerre will be looking to maintain their strong home record and win their first two Ligue 1 home games of a season for the first time since 2012. Christophe Pelissier’s men are well-organised and capable of putting opponents under pressure, particularly when playing in front of their home fans. Lassine Sinayoko is expected to be the key man in attack, providing the main offensive spark for AJA. Monaco, on the other hand, come into this fixture boosted by a dramatic 3-2 win over Strasbourg thanks to Takumi Minamino’s stoppage-time heroics, but their away form remains a concern – they have dropped points in four of their last five away games and failed to score in their last two on the road. Adi Hütter still has a strong attacking unit at his disposal, with Balogun and Akliouche capable of punishing any defensive lapse. Monaco’s defence is far from watertight, having conceded in each of their last four league matches. This points towards an open and entertaining contest where both teams are likely to find the net. The most logical choice here is to back both teams to score.

Lille vs Toulouse (14.09.2025, 15:00)

Tip: Lille to win

After a stunning 7-1 victory over Lorient, Lille will look to extend their unbeaten run at home against ambitious Toulouse. Les Dogues have started the season in excellent form, sitting third in the table and clearly aiming for a Champions League spot. Matias Fernandez-Pardo was the star of the previous match with a brace, while Hamza Igamane has adapted quickly since joining from Rangers. Summer signing Felix Correia has provided three assists in three games, giving Lille a dangerous edge on the wings. Toulouse are no pushovers, having won their opening two games before a 3-6 defeat to PSG, where they still managed to score three goals against the champions. Frank Magri has started the campaign well with two goals in three appearances and forms a dangerous partnership with Thijs Dallinga. We can expect an open, attacking game, as both sides like to press high and create chances. Lille’s control in midfield could be decisive, and we believe the hosts will take all three points.

Brest vs Paris FC (14.09.2025, 17:15)

Tip: Both teams to score

Brest are still waiting for their first win of the season, and a home clash with newly promoted Paris FC is the perfect chance to break that run. Defensive issues remain a major concern for Eric Roy’s men, with eight goals conceded in three games. Mama Baldé scored last time out and should be their main attacking threat. Paris FC, meanwhile, claimed a historic first Ligue 1 win in 46 years last weekend and travel to Brittany full of confidence. Ilan Kebbal, with three goals already this season, is tied for the league lead and forms a dangerous duo with Moses Simon. However, Paris FC’s defence is also fragile, having conceded eight goals as well. This match is expected to be open and attacking, with chances at both ends. Our pick is for both teams to find the net.

Metz vs Angers (14.09.2025, 17:15)

Tip: Under 2.5 goals

Metz are desperate to stop their losing run after three straight defeats and will look to make home advantage count against Angers. The main issue is their attack, which has averaged less than one goal per game, while the defence has conceded over two goals per match in their last three outings. Georges Mikautadze will once again be key to their hopes of turning the tide. Angers arrive in slightly better form with three wins from their last six matches, relying on a disciplined backline that concedes just 0.8 goals per game. Their main weakness is away scoring – just one goal in their last three road matches. This could be a tactical battle with Metz trying to be more proactive while Angers sit deep and look to hit on the counter. Goals may be at a premium here. We recommend backing under 2.5 goals.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Lens (14.09.2025, 17:15)

Tip: PSG to win

PSG are continuing their perfect start to the title defence and welcome Lens to Parc des Princes as clear favourites. Despite injuries to Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, Joao Neves is in outstanding form and scored a hat-trick in the 6-3 win over Toulouse. Luis Enrique will demand more focus in the closing stages after conceding two late goals in that match. Lens come into this game on the back of wins over Le Havre and Brest, but their record in Paris is poor, with defeats in six of their last nine visits. Wesley Said and Rayan Fofana must be clinical if Lens are to stand a chance of an upset. PSG will look to Bradley Barcola for creativity and expect to control possession. This should be an entertaining game with attacking football from both sides. PSG’s quality and depth make them the logical pick for the win.

Strasbourg vs Le Havre (14.09.2025, 17:15)

Tip: Strasbourg to win

Strasbourg narrowly lost 2-3 to Monaco last weekend and will aim to bounce back and maintain their perfect home record. Liam Rosenior’s side have played attractive football but all of their goals this season have come after the 70th minute, which suggests they need more efficiency early in games. Dilane Bakwa and Joaquin Panichelli, who both scored in the last match, will be key attacking threats again. Le Havre have been very consistent in front of goal, scoring in 18 straight Ligue 1 matches, but remain leaky at the back. Rassoul N'Diaye and Fode Doucoure are leading their scoring charts, while Mory Diaw will need to organise the defence better to get a result here. Strasbourg’s strong home record makes them favourites, and a win would push them closer to the top of the table. Le Havre did manage to win here last season, which will motivate them, but we still back Strasbourg to edge this encounter.

Rennes vs Lyon (14.09.2025, 20:45)

Tip: Draw

Rennes return home after two winless matches and will try to extend their three-game winning streak at Roazhon Park. Habib Beye’s men rely on Esteban Lepauel, who scored his first goal since joining the club, but they need to be much tighter defensively than in the draw with Angers. Lyon are enjoying a dream start to the season with three straight wins and no goals conceded, and Jorge Maciel will want to see that defensive solidity continue. Pavel Sulc scored late last weekend and is becoming a key figure in midfield. Lyon can start a Ligue 1 season with four wins for the first time in 43 years, so motivation is high. Rennes, however, have a strong home record against Lyon, including a 3-0 win in this fixture last season. This match promises to be balanced and intense. We see a share of the spoils as the most likely outcome.
