Champions League Preview (September 16, 2025) – 16.9. 2025

Athletic Bilbao vs Arsenal (16.09.2025, 18:45)

Tip: Arsenal to win

Athletic Bilbao enters the Champions League after an excellent fourth-place finish in La Liga, and San Mamés will once again provide a fiery atmosphere. Coach Ernesto Valverde must do without Nico Williams, whose injury weakens the left side, but he can rely on captain Iñaki Williams and the creativity of Oihan Sancet. Arsenal arrives with the ambition to start their quest for the coveted trophy in style after a £250 million summer investment to strengthen the squad. Mikel Arteta still faces squad concerns – Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are sidelined, and Ødegaard is only just returning – but Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyökeres have shown excellent form in the league. The Gunners also have a streak of five straight wins against Spanish opposition and high confidence after a 3-0 win over Nottingham. It should be a balanced match, but Arsenal’s quality combined with their big-match experience should be enough to secure victory.

PSV Eindhoven vs Union SG (16.09.2025, 18:45)

Tip: PSV to win

PSV will be eager to make amends to their supporters at the Philips Stadium after last year’s heavy defeat to Arsenal. Peter Bosz’s men have four wins from five league games, with the attack led by Ricardo Pepi, who scored twice over the weekend. The injury to Armando Obispo may open the door for youngster Ryan Flamingo to start. Union SG are playing in the Champions League group stage for the first time in 90 years and arrive with great confidence, having won five of their last seven games and kept five clean sheets. They will, however, miss suspended striker Raul Florucz, so Kevin Rodriguez – who scored the weekend’s winning goal – is expected to start up front. PSV has a significantly stronger squad, Champions League experience, and the backing of a passionate home crowd, which should bring them all three points.

Benfica vs Qarabag FK (16.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Benfica to win

Benfica are in outstanding form – unbeaten after four league matches and without a loss in eight competitive games in all competitions. Coach Bruno Lage must cope without Dedić, Bruma and Lukebakio, but he still has a strong lineup available with Nicolas Otamendi marshalling the defence and Vangelis Pavlidis spearheading the attack. The Estadio da Luz is historically a fortress on European nights, and the Eagles will be eager to start the group stage with a win. Qarabag remain the only Azerbaijani club to ever reach this stage of the competition and arrive in Lisbon after a mixed start in their domestic league. Kevin Medina and Bahlul Mustafazada will anchor the defence, but the visitors often struggle away from home and face a much higher tempo of play. Benfica should have enough attacking quality to break down the visitors’ backline and live up to their status as clear favourites.

Juventus vs Borussia Dortmund (16.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Over 2.5 goals

Juventus come into this match after a sensational 4-3 win over Inter and enter the Champions League with a perfect league record. Igor Tudor can field a strong starting eleven with Bremer, Locatelli and the attacking duo of Jonathan David and Dušan Vlahović. Juventus have been very offensive at home, scoring seven goals in their last three games. Borussia Dortmund under Niko Kovac have maintained a solid defence despite the absences of Emre Can and Niklas Süle, while Serhou Guirassy leads the attack with four goals to his name. Midfielder Jobe Bellingham is getting his chance to shine and is eager to impress on the European stage. Both teams possess strong attacking firepower, and their styles of play promise an open, offensive encounter. The probability of at least three goals being scored is very high.

Real Madrid vs Marseille (16.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Real Madrid to win

Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso lead La Liga with a 100% record, and despite the injuries to Antonio Rüdiger, Jude Bellingham and Endrick, they still have a very strong squad. Kylian Mbappé and Arda Güler both scored in the last match, Federico Valverde is expected to return to the starting eleven, and Trent Alexander-Arnold should start at right-back. Marseille under Roberto De Zerbi produced a dominant performance against Lorient after the international break, but their away record is poor – two defeats in two games. Key players like Mason Greenwood and Benjamin Pavard will try to surprise the favourite, but history is against them – a French team has never beaten Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. Real should control the game and confirm their favourite status.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Villarreal (16.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Tottenham to win

Tottenham under Thomas Frank have started the season very well and brushed aside West Ham 3-0 at the weekend, keeping their third consecutive clean sheet in the Premier League. Even without injured striker Dominic Solanke, Spurs still have enough attacking firepower – Richarlison or Randal Kolo Muani are expected to lead the line, while Xavi Simons provides creativity from the wing. Villarreal, on the other hand, have lost their way recently, collecting just one point from their last three matches. Nicolas Pépé will look to continue his fine La Liga form, but the absence of Gerard Moreno is a major blow. Tottenham boast a 20-game unbeaten streak in European competitions at home and will be eager to keep that run going. The quality of their squad and the strength of their home advantage should be decisive in London’s favour.
