Champions League Preview (September 17, 2025) – 17.9. 2025

Olympiacos vs Pafos FC (17.09.2025, 18:45)

Tip: Olympiacos to win

Olympiacos return to the Champions League after four years away and enter the competition in tremendous spirits. Under Jose Luis Mendilibar, they won the Greek Super League and have yet to concede a single goal this season, scoring nine goals in three matches. The main attacking threat will be Mehdi Taremi, who joined from Inter Milan and scored twice on his debut. Experienced goalkeeper Alexandros Paschalakis should replace the suspended Konstantinos Tzolakis between the posts. Although Pafos are experiencing a historic moment and their path to the Champions League after knocking out Crvena Zvezda was a fairytale, the difference in quality is significant. The visitors also suffered a weekend defeat to Apollon Limassol, which could affect their confidence. Coach Juan Carlos Carcedo will rely on Jaja and veteran David Luiz in defence, but Olympiacos are strong at home – they have won five of their last seven European matches at Karaiskakis Stadium. The quality of the squad and home support point to a clear win for the Greek champions, and we expect Olympiacos to take the first three points.

Slavia Prague vs Bodo/Glimt (17.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Slavia to win

Slavia Prague return to the main phase of the Champions League for the first time in six years, and Fortuna Arena will witness a historic clash against the Norwegian champions. Jindrich Trpisovsky's men are in excellent form – they top the domestic league, have three straight wins, and defeated Karvina 3-1 at the weekend. Key players should include Lukas Provod, who has scored twice already, and creative midfielder Christos Zafeiris. The visitors must cope without top scorer Kasper Høgh and several other key players (Bjorkan, Moe, Blomberg), which is a major handicap. Although Bodo/Glimt eliminated Sturm Graz, they are less consistent away from home and are also focused on their title fight with Viking in the league. Slavia will want to use their fast wingers and high pressing to pin the opponent back. The fans will create a fantastic atmosphere that should help the home side. We expect an active performance from Slavia and a win that would be a perfect start to their campaign.

Ajax vs Inter Milan (17.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Draw

Ajax begin a new era under John Heitinga and enter the Champions League with a clean slate and three home victories. They are traditionally very strong at Johan Cruyff Arena, and the attacking duo of Wout Weghorst and Mika Godts are finding form. Inter, on the other hand, have had a tough start to the season – defeats to Udinese and Juventus exposed defensive vulnerabilities. Cristian Chivu, however, has a full squad at his disposal, including new signings Manuel Akanji, Petar Sucic, and Andy Diouf, all of whom could feature. Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram form a dangerous strike partnership that can punish any mistakes. History favours Inter, who have won three of the last four Champions League meetings between the two, but Ajax’s current form suggests a close contest. We expect an open and entertaining game where both sides will find the net, but ultimately share the points.

Bayern Munich vs Chelsea (17.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Bayern to win

Bayern, under Vincent Kompany, have started the season superbly – five wins from five matches and a fresh 5-0 victory over Hamburg underline their strength. Harry Kane is in top form and, together with Luis Diaz, forms one of the most dangerous attacking duos in Europe. Chelsea return to the Champions League after two years away, but they have already been held to two draws in the Premier League and coach Enzo Maresca is still searching for the ideal lineup. The Blues will be without Mykhaylo Mudryk (suspension) and Benoit Badiashile, and Joao Pedro is doubtful. Allianz Arena is a fortress – Bayern are unbeaten in 34 consecutive Champions League group/league phase home games. History is also on the side of the hosts, who have beaten Chelsea three times in a row since the legendary 2012 final. If Chelsea cannot withstand sustained pressure, Bayern should claim the victory and start the campaign strongly.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid (17.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: Over 2.5 goals

Liverpool under Arne Slot have started the season perfectly, winning all four Premier League games, often thanks to late goals. Mohamed Salah remains the leader of the attack, and new signing Alexander Isak could make his debut against Atletico. The visitors’ defence is facing problems – Robin Le Normand, David Hancko, and Nico Gonzalez are doubtful after picking up knocks at the weekend, forcing Diego Simeone to improvise. Atletico’s form improved with a 2-0 win over Villarreal, which should boost confidence, with Pablo Barrios and Gonzalez getting on the scoresheet. Although Atletico are usually defensively solid, they have been conceding goals recently, and Anfield will be a tough test. Liverpool have scored two or more goals in each of their last 13 home European matches, which promises an attacking spectacle. We expect an entertaining match with at least three goals.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Atalanta BC (17.09.2025, 21:00)

Tip: PSG to win

PSG begin the defence of their Champions League title at Parc des Princes, coming off a 6-0 win over Toulouse and a victory over Lens. Luis Enrique still has Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the injury list, but should have captain Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes back. The key figure will be Kylian Mbappé, who led PSG to last season’s historic triumph. Atalanta, meanwhile, are without Ederson and Sead Kolasinac, and Gianluca Scamacca remains doubtful, so Nikola Krstovic is likely to lead the line. New coach Ivan Juric is trying to re-establish the team’s identity, but they face an extremely difficult challenge on matchday one. PSG are almost unbeatable at home in European competition and have the squad depth to rotate effectively. We expect a dominant performance from the Parisians and a comfortable win.
