Tip: Feyenoord to win
Excelsior returned to the Eredivisie after a year, but their debut away at NEC ended in disaster – a 0-5 defeat. The biggest blow was the injury to goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel, whose replacement Tijmen Holla conceded four goals within an hour. Nevertheless, the newcomers will try to build on last season’s excellent home record in the second tier, when they won 14 of 19 matches at Woudestein. However, their poor record against Feyenoord is discouraging – they have lost the last five meetings with an aggregate score of 3-15, highlighting their rivals’ dominance. Robin van Persie’s men started the league with a win against NAC Breda but were knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Mourinho’s Fenerbahce during midweek. Van Persie also has a long list of absentees, including Trauner, Moder and Beelen, and last season’s top scorer Igor Paixão has departed. Goalscoring duties will now fall to Ayase Ueda, who scored in the opening round, and the creative Anis Hadj Moussa, who is expected to become a new attacking focal point. Despite these issues, Feyenoord’s overall quality and dominance in recent head-to-head meetings make them the clear favorite.
Tip: NEC to win
Heracles started the season with a shocking 0-4 defeat against Utrecht, once again showing defensive weaknesses. Goalkeeper Fabian de Keijzer produced some good saves but also made a costly mistake for one of the goals. Coach Bas Sibum faces a dilemma in attack as well – Jizz Hornkamp was invisible in the opener, and it remains to be seen whether Luka Kulenović, last season’s top scorer, will get the chance. NEC, by contrast, displayed outstanding attacking power with a 5-0 thrashing of Excelsior. Koki Ogawa scored a quick brace, Bryan Linssen and Tjaronn Chery also found the net, while Basar Onal shone on the left with two assists. New coach Dick Schreuder enjoyed an ideal debut and will want his men to follow it up with another strong performance away from home. NEC also have a good record here, having beaten Heracles at this venue in the final round of last season. Based on form and firepower, NEC are favored.
Tip: Double chance Groningen or draw
Groningen disappointed badly in Alkmaar, where they lost 1-4, with the game effectively decided after just half an hour. Marco Rente managed to score, but overall the defence led by captain Stij Resink collapsed. Coach Dick Lukkien will hope to build on last year’s home victory against Heerenveen, which was their first in seven years. The visitors from Friesland opened the season with a 1-1 draw against Volendam, but their performance was timid – after Luuk Brouwers’ early goal, they sat back and created little danger. Their away record is dreadful – only two wins in the last 17 away league matches, the last one back in January. Robin Veldman must also find a replacement for last season’s leading scorer Ion Nicolaescu, who left for Israel. Players such as Levi Smans and Vasilios Zagaritis, who impressed in the first round, will need to step up. Given Heerenveen’s weak away form, Groningen have a real chance to take at least a point.
Tip: Ajax to win
Go Ahead Eagles showed tremendous fighting spirit when they equalised deep into stoppage time at Fortuna Sittard despite being reduced to 10 men. New coach Melvin Boel will have been pleased with the resilience, even though his team faced 36 shots from the opposition. For the clash with Ajax, however, he will miss suspended Calvin Twigt, which weakens the midfield. Ajax beat newly promoted Telstar 2-0, but their performance was unconvincing and the opponent created several clear chances. Two goals from Wout Weghorst demonstrated that the experienced striker remains lethal inside the box. John Heitinga has yet to find the right attacking combination, while injuries to Josip Sutalo and Brian Brobbey further limit his options. Ajax often struggle in Deventer – they have won only once in their last three visits – and the home side believe they can spring a surprise. Still, the overall strength of Ajax should prevail.
Tip: PSV to win
Twente suffered an unlucky 0-1 defeat at PEC Zwolle, despite goalkeeper Tom de Graaff making several important saves. Scoring goals has been a problem – already evident during pre-season – and this lack of productivity continues to haunt the Tukkers. At home, however, they are traditionally strong, losing only three times last season in Enschede. Yet they now face a rampant PSV side that demolished Sparta Rotterdam 6-1 and showed that their championship form remains intact. Six different goalscorers, including Ivan Perisic and Yarek Gąsiorowski, underlined the depth of Peter Bosz’s squad. Midfield orchestrator Joey Veerman stood out with two assists and once again confirmed he is the brain of the team. With six straight wins over Twente, PSV arrive full of confidence, and another dominant display in Enschede is widely expected.
Tip: Utrecht to win
Sparta were humiliated 1-6 by PSV in their opening game, underlining that the newly assembled squad needs more time to gel. Coach Maurice Steijn brought in nine new players over the summer, but cohesion is still missing. The absence of striker Tobias Lauritsen, sidelined with a hand injury, is also a big problem. Utrecht, on the other hand, are flying high – five consecutive wins and progression to the Europa League playoff after eliminating Servette 2-1. In the league, Ron Jans’s men brushed aside Heracles 4-0, with goals from Min, Jensen and de Wit. Experienced midfielder Gjivai Zechiel also played a key role by opening the scoring. Utrecht even won 4-1 at Sparta last season, and their current form strongly suggests they will be favourites once again.
Tip: AZ Alkmaar to win
Volendam marked their Eredivisie return with a positive 1-1 draw at Heerenveen, showing good composure after conceding an early goal. Debutant Ozan Kokcu scored and looks set to be an important player this season. At home they were formidable in the second tier, collecting 45 points last season, but AZ represent a far tougher challenge. The Alkmaar side began the league with a 4-1 win against Groningen and also progressed in Europe after overcoming Vaduz. Striker Troy Parrott is in fine form, scoring in both league and European matches. Right-back Denso Kasius impressed with a goal, solid defensive work and creativity on the flank, underlining the depth of the squad. History is firmly on AZ’s side – seven wins in the last eight meetings, including heavy victories of 4-0 and 3-0 in recent seasons. AZ are clearly favored here.
Tip: Double chance Fortuna or draw
NAC Breda returned to the Eredivisie with a tough assignment at Feyenoord, where they lost 0-2. Coach Carl Hoefkens can at least be pleased that one of the hardest games of the season is already out of the way. At their Rat Verlegh Stadium, the Yellow-Blacks are much more dangerous and last season managed to beat stronger sides there. Fortuna opened the campaign with a 2-2 draw against Go Ahead Eagles but let victory slip away in stoppage time, even though they played against 10 men. Goals came from Philip Brittijn and Luka Tunjic, who is now pushing for a starting role. Coach Danny Buijs knows his team must improve their productivity, as last year’s tally of 37 goals was far too low. Nevertheless, Fortuna have a deeper squad and quality players such as Kristoffer Peterson and experienced goalkeeper Ivor Pandur, which could prove decisive in matches against bottom-half opponents. Therefore, the safer choice is Fortuna not to lose.
