Tip: Liverpool win
The defending champions enter the season with the ambition to reaffirm their dominance and are on a 17-match unbeaten run at Anfield in the league. Although Arne Slot is dealing with some injury absences, the return of Alexis Mac Allister to the midfield brings stability. Bournemouth underwent a major defensive overhaul over the summer, losing four key players, and their pre-season results were unconvincing. The head-to-head history at Anfield is clear – six straight defeats with an aggregate score of 23-2. With Mohamed Salah in form and new attacking reinforcements, the hosts should confirm their significant quality.
Tip: Aston Villa win
Villa Park was an impregnable fortress last season, with Aston Villa winning their last eight competitive home matches and losing only once at home all season. Ollie Watkins has an excellent record against Newcastle – scoring in all four of his home league games against them and contributing seven goal involvements in total. Newcastle enter the campaign after a poor pre-season and with uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak, which could leave the striker position weakened. The combination of home strength, attacking efficiency and the absence of key players for the visitors strongly favours the Villans.
Tip: Brighton win
Brighton enjoyed an excellent pre-season with six wins and one draw, and they have won their opening league game for four consecutive years. Although they lost Joao Pedro and Pervis Estupinan, the attacking trio of Mitoma–Welbeck–Rutter has the potential to break down the visitors' defence. Fulham may have had a perfect pre-season, but they have made virtually no squad reinforcements and manager Marco Silva has pointed out the limited squad depth. Historically, Fulham have had only limited success at the Amex Stadium, and Brighton are maintaining the high scoring pace from the end of last season.
Tip: Tottenham win
Despite the Super Cup defeat to PSG, Tottenham showed they can compete with Europe's elite. Their home debut against newly promoted Burnley comes after a tough but high-quality pre-season. Burnley may have produced an extraordinary defensive record in the Championship, but the Premier League is a different level, and they also have a negative streak of three consecutive defeats in top-flight season openers. Spurs have a strong attack with Solanke returning, which should be enough to break down the visitors' defensive block.
Tip: West Ham win
Sunderland return to the top flight after eight years and have completely rebuilt their squad over the summer, which could require more time to gel. Their pre-season was poor in terms of results, and the team is also missing several injured key players. West Ham, under Graham Potter, have stabilised their play and beat the likes of Everton and Bournemouth in pre-season. Jarrod Bowen is in form and can take advantage of the home defence’s inexperience. Historically, the Hammers are unbeaten in their last eight league meetings with Sunderland.
Tip: Manchester City win
Although Manchester City failed to win any trophies last season, Pep Guardiola has brought in reinforcements such as Reijnders and Cherki, and the squad has enough quality to return to title contention. Wolves have lost key players Cunha and Ait-Nouri and lost four of their five pre-season matches. City have won seven of their last eight opening league games away from home with a 19-2 goal difference and have beaten Wolves in nine of their last ten head-to-head encounters.
Tip: Brentford not to lose (X2)
Nottingham Forest start the season after a winless pre-season and with attacking problems. Brentford have changed their manager and lost several key players, but they have a long-term good record at the City Ground – losing there only twice in their last ten visits. The visitors have a strong transition game and showed solid organisation during pre-season. X2 covers the possibility of a draw in what could be a balanced match.
Tip: Draw
Both teams enter the season with strong ambitions – United have strengthened their attack with Benjamin Sesko, while Arsenal have brought in Viktor Gyokeres. United are historically the most successful team in opening round matches, while Arsenal have started the Premier League with a win for the last three years and have scored in 11 consecutive league matches at Old Trafford. Strong attacking weapons on both sides and balanced pre-season parameters suggest that both could come away with a point.
Tip: Chelsea win
Chelsea come into the season after winning the Club World Cup and have brought in a number of talented reinforcements who can slot into the system immediately. Their pre-season was successful, and an attack led by Cole Palmer is highly productive. Crystal Palace may have claimed the Community Shield against Liverpool, but they have consistently struggled away at Stamford Bridge. The hosts have a deeper squad and the quality to justify their status as favourites.
