Bundesliga Matchday 1 Preview (August 22–24, 2025) – 22.-24.8. 2025

Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig (22.08.2025, 20:30)

Tip: Bayern win

The Bundesliga will kick off in spectacular fashion as reigning champions Bayern Munich host RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena. The Bavarian giants, led by Vincent Kompany, reclaimed the crown after a one-year break, finishing the season with an impressive 82 points and 99 goals scored. Although Bayern failed against PSG in the quarterfinal of the Club World Cup during the summer, they showed their strength in the German Super Cup by beating Stuttgart, underlining their determination to dominate again this season. Kompany, however, will have to cope without Jamal Musiala, who is out long-term with injury, meaning that new signing Michael Olise should feature in the number 10 role. Up front, all eyes will once again be on Harry Kane, who will want to continue his prolific scoring form, while Luis Díaz and Serge Gnabry will provide pace and creativity from the wings. At the back, Jonathan Tah has settled quickly next to Dayot Upamecano, but they will face a test against Lois Openda, who remains Leipzig’s main attacking weapon after the departure of Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United. Leipzig, under new coach Ole Werner, are seeking a revival after finishing only seventh last season and missing out on European football for the first time in nine years. Xavi Simons is expected to be a key man in midfield, but the big question remains whether Leipzig’s inconsistent defense can withstand the attacking pressure of Bayern at the Allianz Arena.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Hoffenheim (23.08.2025, 15:30)

Tip: Leverkusen win

Leverkusen begin the new Bundesliga season at home against Hoffenheim, and the BayArena will be filled with anticipation. Die Werkself finished second last year, but 13 points behind Bayern, and with Xabi Alonso departing to Real Madrid, the spotlight is now on Erik ten Hag. The new coach started confidently with a 4-0 DFB-Pokal win, showing that Leverkusen’s attack is still potent, with Patrik Schick expected to carry much of the goalscoring burden. The departures of Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah were significant, but replacements such as Aleix Garcia and Jarell Quansah have been brought in. Hoffenheim, by contrast, struggled badly last season, finishing just above the relegation playoff spot and conceding 68 goals, making them the second-worst defense in the league. Manager Christian Ilzer saw his team win 4-0 against Hansa Rostock in the DFB-Pokal, but the absence of star striker Gift Orban due to injury will hurt. Tim Lemperle may step in up front, while Leon Avdullahu, a new signing from Basel, strengthens midfield. Historically, Hoffenheim have struggled against Leverkusen, losing the last five meetings in a row. Unless their defense shows dramatic improvement, this looks like another difficult afternoon for them.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Werder Bremen (23.08.2025, 15:30)

Tip: Frankfurt win

Eintracht Frankfurt enter the new season with big ambitions after qualifying for the Champions League via their league finish for the first time in club history. Under coach Dino Toppmöller, the Eagles produced their best points tally in decades, scoring 68 goals in the Bundesliga and playing an attractive attacking style. This summer, Jonathan Burkardt arrived to lead the line after the departures of Hugo Ekitike and Omar Marmoush, and he is expected to form a dynamic partnership with Ritsu Doan. Frankfurt’s strong start to the season continued in the DFB-Pokal with a resounding 5-0 win, underlining their form. Werder Bremen, meanwhile, begin under new boss Horst Steffen after Ole Werner left for RB Leipzig. Steffen’s debut could not have gone worse, as Bremen crashed out of the DFB-Pokal to second-tier Arminia Bielefeld. To make matters worse, the squad has been plagued by injuries, particularly in defense, with Pieper, Wober and Stark all sidelined. Up front, Romano Schmid will carry much of the creative responsibility, while youngster Keke Topp may get a chance. Recent meetings between the sides have been relatively even, but given Frankfurt’s momentum and the injury crisis at Bremen, the hosts are heavy favorites to start the league campaign with three points.

Freiburg vs Augsburg (23.08.2025, 15:30)

Tip: Freiburg win

Freiburg, under Julian Schuster, are living through a dream period – last year they finished fifth in the Bundesliga and qualified for the Europa League. Schuster, who was named Coach of the Year in Germany, has been praised for his ability to integrate young players, and this summer’s signings reflect that philosophy, with several arrivals under the age of 24. The team enjoyed an unbeaten pre-season and began the competitive campaign with a 2-0 DFB-Pokal win over Lotte. The squad looks balanced and confident, and players like Lucas Höler and Eren Dinkci continue to play important roles. Augsburg, by contrast, had a turbulent season in 2024-25, flirting with relegation before a strong unbeaten run briefly raised European hopes, only to collapse at the end with four consecutive defeats. They finished 12th and now begin a new era under Sandro Wagner, who started positively with a 2-0 DFB-Pokal victory. However, Augsburg are hampered by the absence of playmaker Alexis Claude-Maurice due to injury, a big blow for their creativity. Their attack will rely heavily on Phillip Tietz and Steve Mounié, with summer signing Elias Saad also a possible option. While Augsburg have bolstered their defense, it remains to be seen if they can cope with Freiburg’s fast, youthful attack. The home side look stronger on all fronts and enter as clear favorites.

Heidenheim vs Wolfsburg (23.08.2025, 15:30)

Tip: Over 2.5 goals

Heidenheim survived in the Bundesliga only through a dramatic playoff win against Elversberg and now face another challenging campaign. Long-serving coach Frank Schmidt, in charge for 19 years, remains the heart of the club, and his team started with a morale-boosting 5-0 DFB-Pokal victory. New signings Diant Ramaj (on loan from Dortmund) and Arijon Ibrahimović (on loan from Bayern) have already made an impact, raising hopes that Heidenheim can be competitive. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, begin a new era under Dutch coach Paul Simonis, who arrives with little experience but great promise after winning the Dutch Cup with Go Ahead Eagles. Wolfsburg showed their attacking potential with a 9-0 demolition of Hemelingen in the cup, although they have been hit by injuries to key players such as Denis Vavro, Andreas Skov Olsen and Mohamed Amoura. Jesper Lindstrom also remains sidelined, reducing their attacking options. Heidenheim will once again rely on hard work and home advantage, with striker Budu Zivzivadze expected to lead the line. Wolfsburg still have the deeper squad and individual quality, but their defensive issues may leave the door open for an open, high-scoring encounter.

Union Berlin vs Stuttgart (23.08.2025, 15:30)

Tip: Stuttgart win

Union Berlin endured a difficult season last year, finishing 13th and struggling badly at home, where they won just twice in their last 14 Bundesliga matches. Coach Steffen Baumgart will try to stabilize the team, and Union showed some attacking spirit in a 5-0 DFB-Pokal win against Gütersloh. However, their offensive struggles were evident last season, and much will depend on whether forwards Andrej Ilic and Ilyas Ansah can find form. Stuttgart, in contrast, enter the season with greater optimism after winning the DFB-Pokal last year and qualifying for Europe. Although they lost to Bayern in the Super Cup, coach Sebastian Hoeness has built a strong and balanced side. Strikers Deniz Undav and Nick Woltemade are expected to spearhead the attack, supported by midfield orchestrator Angelo Stiller. Stuttgart are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Union, scoring heavily in some of those matches. Union are also weakened by the absence of goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow due to concussion, which makes their task even harder. Given Stuttgart’s superior squad depth and recent form, they are clear favorites to take three points in Berlin.

St. Pauli vs Borussia Dortmund (23.08.2025, 18:30)

Tip: Dortmund win

St. Pauli secured survival in the Bundesliga last year, but their biggest problem was their lack of goals – they scored only 28 times, the fewest of any team in the top flight. Their defense was solid, however, conceding only 41 goals, bettered only by Bayern Munich. Coach Alexander Blessin still needs to find solutions in attack, and their narrow DFB-Pokal progression on penalties against Norderstedt did little to inspire confidence. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, underwent a transformation under new coach Niko Kovac. After a poor start last season, Dortmund climbed to fourth place thanks to a superb finish, winning 22 out of the last possible 24 points. Striker Serhou Guirassy, who netted 21 Bundesliga goals last season, will again be their key man up front, while new signing Pascal Groß strengthens the midfield. Young Jobe Bellingham is also pushing for more minutes and could start. Defensively, Dortmund are dealing with injuries to Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle, but they still possess much greater quality than their opponents. St. Pauli will rely on their fighting spirit and the intimidating atmosphere of Millerntor-Stadion, but Dortmund are overwhelming favorites.

Mainz 05 vs FC Köln (24.08.2025, 15:30)

Tip: Mainz 05 to win

Mainz enter the new Bundesliga season boosted by last year’s sixth place and their return to European competition after more than a decade. Bo Henriksen’s side is built on a strong defence, which ranked among the best in the league, and they went unbeaten in their last twelve home matches at the Mewa Arena. Their main issue was a run of draws, but the new campaign offers a chance to improve. Jonathan Burkardt has left for Frankfurt, and new striker Benedict Hollerbach is expected to fill his place in attack. In midfield, the reliable duo of Sano and Amiri continues to provide both stability and creativity. Köln, meanwhile, return to the Bundesliga after just one year and are unbeaten in nine matches under Lukas Kwasniok, although many of those came in pre-season and in a cup tie against Regensburg, which they only won with stoppage-time goals. Their away form last year was inconsistent, and the last three meetings with Mainz all ended in draws. Given Mainz’s strong home record, defensive solidity and greater experience, the hosts look like the favourites to claim three points.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Hamburger SV (24.08.2025, 17:30)

Tip: Both teams to score (BTTS)

Borussia Monchengladbach start the new season aiming to improve on their 10th-place finish and fix their defensive problems, having conceded 57 goals last season. Coach Gerardo Seoane faces the challenge of replacing injured striker Tim Kleindienst, meaning Haris Tabakovic is expected to lead the line supported by Franck Honorat and Robin Hack. Gladbach had a poor summer but scraped a 3-2 DFB-Pokal win that highlighted both their attacking potential and defensive vulnerabilities. Hamburger SV, meanwhile, return to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2018 after finishing second in the 2. Bundesliga last season. Under coach Merlin Polzin, HSV boasted the league’s best attack with 78 goals, and their promotion has brought huge excitement to the fanbase. They narrowly beat fourth-tier Pirmasens 2-1 in the DFB-Pokal, but defensive frailties remain. Players like Rayan Philippe and Nicolas Capaldo are expected to play key roles, while Jordan Torunarigha brings experience to the back line. Gladbach’s experience and home advantage make them slight favorites, but HSV’s attacking power and enthusiasm could see them score goals as well. The game promises to be open, entertaining and emotional, with chances on both sides.
