Spanish League Matchday 2 Preview (August 23–25, 2025) – 23.-25.8. 2025

Mallorca vs Celta Vigo (23.08.2025, 17:00 CET)

Tip: Both teams to score (BTTS)

Mallorca enters the second round of La Liga after a heavy 3-0 defeat against Barcelona, where they also lost two players due to red cards. Jagoba Arrasate's team looked clueless in the first half, but with nine men managed to resist in the second half. Nevertheless, it is clear that Mallorca needs a quick response if they want to build on last season’s 10th place. The club brought in several reinforcements in the summer, including Pablo Torre and Kumbulla, but the squad is still searching for optimal cohesion. Celta Vigo also did not start well, losing 0-2 at home to Getafe and showing defensive weaknesses. Still, Claudio Giraldez’s team has strengthened and will play in the Europa League, which raises the team’s ambitions. Celta historically has a better record in head-to-head matches with Mallorca and managed to collect points away from home last season as well. This duel is therefore open, but the greater pressure will be on the home side, who need to make amends in front of their fans.

Atletico Madrid vs Elche (23.08.2025, 19:30 CET)

Tip: Atletico Madrid to win

Atletico Madrid experienced an unexpected shock when they lost 1-2 to Espanyol in the opening round. Diego Simeone admitted tactical mistakes after the match and now must react if he doesn’t want to immediately lose contact with the top of the table. The club strengthened significantly during the summer, with midfielder Alex Baena as the main signing, although he immediately suffered a muscle injury. Nevertheless, Atletico has a very strong squad and will want to show their traditional strength at home. Elche, after returning to La Liga, presented a solid performance by drawing 1-1 with Real Betis. Coach Eder Sarabia strengthened the team with Redondo, Andre Silva, and other players, and although Elche is considered a relegation candidate, the squad looks more compact than in their previous top-flight spell. Atletico, however, is clearly superior and is a huge favorite at home. In addition, the last head-to-head match in the Copa del Rey ended with a clear 4-0 victory for the Madrid side, which shows the difference in quality.

Levante vs Barcelona (23.08.2025, 21:30 CET)

Tip: Barcelona to win

Levante, the Segunda Division champion, faces a very difficult home debut against Barcelona. In the first round, they lost 1-2 to Alaves, and the performance did not match the ambitions of the team. Levante does have an experienced coach, Julian Calero, and interesting signings such as Olasagasti, but in this match, they are clear outsiders. Barcelona, on the other hand, entered the season dominantly, beating Mallorca 3-0 and showing attacking strength through Raphinha, Torres, and Yamal. Coach Hansi Flick can also count on the return of Robert Lewandowski, although his start is still uncertain due to a hamstring injury. The statistics are clear – Barcelona has won 39 of the last 45 head-to-head matches. However, Levante is capable of troubling the favorite, as shown in the past, for example with the memorable 5-4 victory in 2018. Still, if the visitors repeat the pace and efficiency from the opening round, they should confirm their role as favorites.

Osasuna vs Valencia (24.08.2025, 17:00 CET)

Tip: Draw

Osasuna opened the season with a narrow 0-1 defeat to Real Madrid, but showed an organized performance that suggests they could again fight for European spots. New coach Alessio Lisci has a stable squad at his disposal, even if the arrivals were mostly cosmetic. Valencia began with a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad, with Diego Lopez scoring their goal. Coach Carlos Corberan has a young, talented team, reinforced with Agirrezabala, Danjuma, and Raba. However, the departure of Mosquera to Arsenal weakened the defense. Osasuna is traditionally strong at home, but against Valencia the record is balanced, and matches are often very tight. Given the ambitions of both clubs, a close contest can be expected. Particularly important will be the productivity of the strikers, especially Budimir for Osasuna and Hugo Duro for Valencia.

Real Sociedad vs Espanyol (24.08.2025, 19:30 CET)

Tip: Real Sociedad to win

Real Sociedad started the season with a 1-1 draw against Valencia and showed that under new coach Sergio Francisco they are still searching for rhythm. The club had a weaker transfer window but strengthened with Guedes and Caleta-Car, who can bring quality. Espanyol, on the other hand, had a sensational start, defeating Atletico Madrid 2-1 and showing both strength and determination. Coach Manolo Gonzalez has a well-balanced team at his disposal, reinforced with striker Fernandez. However, history is clearly on Sociedad’s side – they have won the last five head-to-head meetings. Espanyol last celebrated a victory against this opponent in 2021. Still, it is expected that the visitors will arrive full of confidence and will want to build on their sensational result from the first round. Real Sociedad, however, has the quality squad and will want to show themselves in a better light in front of the home fans than in the opening round.

Villarreal vs Girona (24.08.2025, 19:30 CET)

Tip: Villarreal to win

Villarreal opened the new season with a 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo and confirmed their ambitions to finish in the top four. Coach Marcelino significantly strengthened the squad over the summer, bringing in Veiga, Mourino, and Partey, and the Yellow Submarine looks very strong. Girona, on the other hand, did not start well, losing 1-3 at home to Rayo Vallecano. Coach Michel’s team, after last season’s drop into the lower half of the table, is trying to stabilize again, but Gutierrez’s move to Napoli is a big loss. Villarreal is traditionally strong at home and has a positive record against Girona, which they confirmed in May with a 1-0 win. Girona added Lemar and Witsel but is still searching for the optimal starting lineup. This match will show whether the Catalan side can return to the performance level from two years ago. However, the home team are clear favorites.

Real Oviedo vs Real Madrid (24.08.2025, 21:30 CET)

Tip: Real Madrid to win

Real Oviedo will play La Liga at home again after more than 20 years, but right away faces a tough test against Real Madrid. The newcomer lost 0-2 to Villarreal in the first round, showing they will be fighting for survival. Veljko Paunovic’s team has a spirited, combative style, but the difference in quality compared to the giants is enormous. Real Madrid started the season with a 1-0 win over Osasuna, scored by Mbappe, and although the performance was not ideal, it showed they have enough individual quality to decide matches. Coach Xabi Alonso will want to see improvement, because he knows Barcelona at the top of the table will be relentless. Real Madrid historically has a significantly better record against Oviedo and has won recent head-to-head matches comfortably. Oviedo, however, can rely on strong home support, which will create a fiery atmosphere. Still, the favorite is clear, and Real should take all three points.

Athletic Bilbao vs Rayo Vallecano (25.08.2025, 19:30)

Tip: Athletic Bilbao to win

Athletic Bilbao started the new season with a 3-2 victory over Sevilla and showed that they want to build on last year’s success and fight again for the Champions League. The Williams brothers were once again decisive, and Robert Navarro’s late goal gave Ernesto Valverde’s team extra confidence. History also favours Athletic – they have won the last four meetings with Rayo and have not lost to them since 2021. San Mamés is traditionally a very difficult place for any visitor. Rayo also began with a 3-1 win against Girona and succeeded in the Conference League playoff, but balancing European and league duties could be a challenge for their squad. De Frutos, Álvaro García and Isi Palazón provide attacking danger, but against Bilbao’s quality and strong defense it may not be enough. Considering the form, home advantage and head-to-head record, Athletic look like the clear favourites.

Sevilla vs Getafe (25.08.2025, 21:30)

Tip: Sevilla to win

Sevilla may have lost 3-2 to Bilbao in the opening round, but under Matías Almeyda they showed improvement and managed to fight back from two goals down. New signings Alfon González, Gabriel Suazo and goalkeeper Vlachodimos should add more stability, while Lukebakio continues to be a key figure in attack. Getafe started their campaign with a 2-0 win against Celta, which gave them confidence, but in recent years they have mostly battled in the lower half of the table and rely heavily on their defence. Sevilla have also won three of the last four head-to-head meetings. José Bordalás has brought in nine new players, but it may take time to find the right chemistry. Getafe’s counter-attacking style can be dangerous, yet Sevilla’s attacking quality and squad depth make them favourites. Playing at home and with motivation after the first-round defeat, Sevilla are expected to claim the three points.
