Italian League Matchday 1 Preview (August 23–25, 2025) – 23.-25.8. 2025

Genoa vs Lecce (23.08.2025, 18:30 CET)

Tip: Genoa to win

Genoa enters the new season in a positive atmosphere after a convincing victory in the Coppa Italia against Vicenza (3:0), where new signings Carboni and Stanciu also impressed. Patrick Vieira managed to stabilize the team last season, when after his arrival he averted the threat of relegation and eventually led the team to a safe mid-table finish. A major weapon of the Genoese side is the home environment – at Marassi they were among the toughest opponents, and against Lecce they hold a streak of nine unbeaten games. In addition, they won the last three home matches against this opponent all by the same scoreline of 2-1, which shows a repeated ability to handle tight games. Lecce saved their Serie A status only thanks to a sensational victory at Lazio on the final matchday, but during the summer they lost key players Baschirotto and Krstovic. Their departures significantly weakened both defense and attack, even though the management brought in Camarda and Sottil as new attacking faces. Another problem for the visitors is tradition – they have won only one out of 19 opening matches in the top flight. If Genoa builds on the solid performances from last year and uses the support of the home crowd, they have a great chance to start the season with three points.

Sassuolo vs Napoli (23.08.2025, 18:30 CET)

Tip: Napoli to win

The reigning Scudetto holders begin the season away at the newly promoted side and are clear favorites. Antonio Conte managed to keep the team together and even strengthened it by bringing in Kevin De Bruyne into midfield and Lucca in attack. Although Napoli lost the attacking duo of Osimhen – Kvaratskhelia during the summer, they still possess enormous quality, which they confirmed with a series of three wins at the end of pre-season. Sassuolo quickly returned to Serie A, but their ambitions are very different – their main goal is survival. The last head-to-head ended 6:1 for Napoli, and this time the difference in quality will again be evident. Fabio Grosso did bring in some experienced players and has Laurienté and Berardi at his disposal, but against such a strong opponent it will be extremely difficult. Statistics also favor the champions – Napoli have not lost against Sassuolo in seven consecutive matches. If the Partenopei confirm their discipline and attacking power, the start of the season should be victorious for them.

AC Milan vs Cremonese (23.08.2025, 20:45 CET)

Tip: AC Milan to win

AC Milan enters the new season with big ambitions and with the return of coach Massimiliano Allegri. Last season was a disappointment for the Rossoneri, as they finished only eighth, but during the summer they strengthened significantly. The team welcomed Modrić, Estupiñán and Jashari, while key players such as Leao and Pulisic remained, even though Leao is currently injured. Milan also reinforced their defense, which was a weak spot, and in the Coppa Italia they immediately showed a good performance against Bari. Cremonese return to Serie A after a year, but their primary goal will again be survival. Statistics are clear – Cremo have lost all eight of their opening matches in the top division so far. Moreover, they lost coach Stroppa, who was replaced by Davide Nicola, known as a relegation savior, but at San Siro his team are clear outsiders. Milan has a much stronger squad and motivation, and they should manage the first step towards returning to the Champions League.

Roma vs Bologna (23.08.2025, 20:45 CET)

Tip: Both teams to score (BTTS)

Roma begins a new era under coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who comes in after Claudio Ranieri. The team improved last season and fought for the Champions League until the final matchday, showing great attacking strength. Now it is expected that Gasperini will imprint an offensive style on the team, based on high pressing and creative play in attack. Bologna comes off a historic season, having won the Coppa Italia and also played in the Champions League. Head-to-head matches between these sides are usually balanced – Bologna even won twice in a row at the Stadio Olimpico. Both teams have strong forwards: Roma can count on Dovbyk or Dybala, while Bologna strengthened with the arrival of Immobile alongside Orsolini. However, the defenses of both sides are not unbreakable, as was shown in pre-season. Therefore, it is realistic to expect that both teams will find the back of the net.

Cagliari vs Fiorentina (24.08.2025, 18:30 CET)

Tip: Fiorentina to win

Fiorentina enters the season encouraged by a clear 3:0 win in the Conference League, where they succeeded even despite the sending off of Moise Kean. Stefano Pioli returns to Serie A and wants to build on the success he experienced at AC Milan. The Viola have a quality and experienced squad, with goalkeeper De Gea staying and new arrivals Fazzini, Sohm and Džeko joining. Cagliari, on the other hand, are facing problems – in the Coppa Italia they only advanced after penalties against second-tier Entella, which suggests weaknesses. The head-to-head record is completely on Fiorentina's side, as they have won the last four matches against Cagliari and are unbeaten in nine consecutive meetings. The home team are also led by newcomer Pisacane, for whom this is the first coaching experience at this level. If the visitors build on Thursday's performance and use the quality of Kean and Beltrán, they should win in Sardinia.

Como vs Lazio (24.08.2025, 18:30 CET)

Tip: Both teams to score (BTTS)

Como are experiencing a renaissance under Cesc Fábregas and enter their second season in the top flight. In the summer, the club invested heavily and brought in Álvaro Morata and other reinforcements from Spain, strengthening an already solid squad. In pre-season they managed to beat Lille, Ajax and Betis, although they suffered a heavy defeat against Barcelona. Lazio, on the other hand, face problems – the return of Maurizio Sarri has been marked by a transfer embargo, which weakened a squad that already failed to reach European places last year. Nevertheless, the Biancocelesti still have experienced players such as Zaccagni, Pedro or Castellanos, who can decide matches. Como, however, play boldly and offensively at home, which often leads to open games with many chances. Given the quality of both attacks and the weaker defenses, it is expected that both teams will score.

Atalanta vs Pisa (24.08.2025, 20:45 CET)

Tip: Atalanta to win

Atalanta begin a new era after the departure of Gasperini, but still remain a strong team. New coach Ivan Jurić has most of the core squad at his disposal, even though top scorer Retegui left and Lookman is preparing to depart. Nevertheless, the lineup still includes players such as Scamacca, Koopmeiners and the newly arrived Zalewski. Pisa return to Serie A after 34 years, and their priority is survival, as confirmed by the appointment of pragmatic coach Gilardino. In pre-season Pisa showed fighting spirit, but in the Coppa Italia they only just progressed after penalties against Cesena. The difference in squad quality is significant, and Atalanta traditionally collect points at home and have wide attacking power. Head-to-head history also shows clearly – Pisa have not played at this level for a long time and face a huge challenge. Everything indicates that the home side will start the season with a win.

Juventus vs Parma (24.08.2025, 20:45 CET)

Tip: Juventus to win

Juventus come off another turbulent season, but under Igor Tudor they managed to secure fourth place in the end. In the summer, Canadian striker Jonathan David arrived to solve the long-standing problems in finishing. Alongside him, Joao Mario joined from Porto, and the squad looks more balanced, although some departures weakened the depth. Parma re-established themselves in the top flight after years and played bravely under Cristian Chivu, but he left for Inter and the team was taken over by young coach Carlos Cuesta. For him it will be a big debut, as he will become one of the youngest managers in Serie A history. Head-to-head matches last season were balanced – Parma beat Juve at home and drew in Turin. This time, however, the difference in quality and experience plays a role, as Juventus have a stronger squad and greater depth on the bench. If David builds on his form from Lille and the defense led by Bremer maintains concentration, the hosts should collect all three points.

Udinese vs Hellas Verona (25.08.2025, 18:30)

Tip: Udinese to win

Udinese begin their 31st consecutive Serie A season with ambitions to improve on a poor finish last year, when they lost eight of their last ten matches. However, Kosta Runjaic’s side bounced back with three straight wins in pre-season and progressed in the Coppa Italia against Carrarese. New signings such as Scotland’s Lennon Miller and defender Saba Goglichidze add fresh energy, even though top scorer Lorenzo Lucca has left for Napoli. In attack, Keinan Davis and Iker Bravo are expected to lead the line, while veteran Alexis Sanchez could be used as an impact option. Udinese are looking for their first league victory over Verona since October 2022. Verona, meanwhile, survived relegation thanks to a strong run at the end of last season, losing just three of their final ten games. Paolo Zanetti’s side scraped past Audace Cerignola in the Coppa Italia on penalties and still looks a work in progress, despite new arrivals like Ebosse and Nunez. With home advantage, squad depth and better form, Udinese appear favourites to start their season with a win.

Inter Milan vs Torino (25.08.2025, 20:45)

Tip: Inter Milan to win

Inter begin the new season seeking redemption after a bitter end to last year, when they lost the Scudetto by one point, exited the Coppa Italia to Milan and were heavily beaten in the Champions League final. Simone Inzaghi stepped down, and now Cristian Chivu, a former Inter defender and youth coach, leads the team. The squad has been reinforced with new arrivals such as Luiz Henrique and Ange-Yoan Bonny, while stars like Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram remain key. Inter won all their pre-season matches and want to confirm their dominance against one of their favourite opponents. Against Torino, they have won 11 of the last 12 league meetings, including six in a row with a 12-2 aggregate score. Torino, under new coach Marco Baroni, are rebuilding after losing Samuele Ricci and bringing in Giovanni Simeone to support Che Adams. Despite more attacking options, Torino still struggle defensively and lack consistency. With their quality, home advantage at San Siro and historical dominance, Inter are clear favourites to take three points.
