Europa League Play-off Round Preview (August 28, 2025) – 28.8.2025

KuPS vs FC Midtjylland (28.08.2025, 17:00 CET)

Tip: Midtjylland win

FC Midtjylland travel to Finland with a comfortable 4-0 advantage from the first leg, and only a major collapse could deny them a place in the Europa League group stage. The Danish side showed ruthless efficiency at home, with two quick goals from Buksa and Osorio laying the foundation for the victory, which was sealed late on by Brumado. Coach Thomasberg has his team in fine form, having eliminated both Hibernian and Fredrikstad in qualifying while also playing attractive attacking football. Midtjylland are also unbeaten in their domestic league with the best offensive record, which underlines their strength. KuPS did manage to bounce back with a league victory over Jaro and remain in the Finnish title race, but against an opponent of this level their chances are minimal. Home coach Wiss is trying to keep his team motivated and believes in a better performance than in Denmark, even though progression looks unrealistic. KuPS also have a domestic cup semifinal ahead of them, which could be a distraction. Midtjylland are expected to confirm their favourite status in Finland and cruise through to the group stage.

Sigma Olomouc vs Malmö (28.08.2025, 18:30 CET)

Tip: Malmö win

Sigma Olomouc go into the second leg against Malmö with a difficult 0-3 deficit to overturn. The Czech side produced a spirited display in Sweden, but two goals from Haksabanovic and a late penalty left them in a very tough position. Coach Janotka praised his players’ effort despite the defeat, but admitted that the team will need a perfect performance and an early goal to stand even a theoretical chance. Sigma are also struggling in their domestic league, as shown by their defeat at Hradec Králové, and the absence of attacking players through injury is clearly felt. Malmö, on the other hand, have stabilized after their Champions League elimination by Copenhagen, showing a strong defence with several recent clean sheets. Coach Rydström warned that despite the three-goal cushion his team cannot afford to relax, but Malmö’s quality and experience are clearly in their favour. Sigma can count on the support of Androv Stadium, but realistically their chances of progression are only theoretical. Malmö are therefore likely to meet expectations and advance among Europe’s elite.

Samsunspor vs Panathinaikos (28.08.2025, 19:00 CET)

Tip: draw or Panathinaikos win

Turkish side Samsunspor believe they can overturn the 1-2 deficit from Athens in front of their home crowd, after coming close to a shock result last week. They led in Greece through a Tomasson goal, but the experienced visitors showed their quality and quickly turned the match around. Panathinaikos displayed discipline and experience, but coach Vitoria warns against underestimating the return leg, as Samsunspor are very strong at home. The Turkish club enjoyed a historic season last year, finishing third in the Super Lig, and now want to prove their growth on the European stage as well. They also head into the second leg boosted by two league wins and the backing of their fans, which could be crucial. Panathinaikos, meanwhile, postponed their league match to fully focus on Europa League qualification, which they are aiming for for the first time in several years. The Greeks have also signed reinforcements such as Renato Sanches and Calabria to increase the squad’s quality. The tie promises to be closely contested, with fine details likely to decide it, but Panathinaikos hold a slight advantage thanks to their first-leg lead.

Ludogorets Razgrad vs Shkendija (28.08.2025, 19:30 CET)

Tip: Ludogorets win

Ludogorets must overturn a one-goal deficit at home after a surprise 1-2 loss in North Macedonia. They had taken an early lead in the first leg, but their opponents fought back to edge closer to a historic progression. The Bulgarian champions have made a good start to their league season and boast an 18-match unbeaten home run. Coach Rui Mota knows his team has both the quality and experience to dominate at home, relying especially on the attacking power of players like Bill and Marcus. Shkendija, however, showed determination in the first leg, with goals from Ibraimi and Latifi proving that smaller clubs can also spring surprises on the European stage. The visitors remain unbeaten in their domestic league and have players capable of dangerous moments in attack. Still, Ludogorets have extensive European pedigree, while Shkendija are still searching for a breakthrough at this level. A strong home performance is expected from Ludogorets, who should be able to confirm their favourite status and progress.

PAOK Thessaloniki vs HNK Rijeka (28.08.2025, 19:30 CET)

Tip: PAOK win

PAOK Thessaloniki approach the second leg seeking to overturn a surprise 0-1 defeat in Croatia. The Greek side have not yet shown dominance in qualifying, as seen in their narrow extra-time win over Wolfsberger in the previous round. Coach Lucescu will rely on experience and the intimidating home atmosphere, where PAOK traditionally perform with confidence. However, they must improve their attack, having scored only two goals in their last four matches – far too little for a team of their potential. Rijeka arrive encouraged by their historic victory, their first ever against a Greek side, and believe they could shock again. However, they showed inconsistency by losing at home to Varazdin in the league at the weekend. PAOK also have a much better record historically against Croatian clubs, whom they have eliminated on several occasions. The return leg promises to be a tough battle, but PAOK’s home strength and experience should prove decisive.

Dynamo Kyiv vs Maccabi Tel Aviv (28.08.2025, 20:00 CET)

Tip: draw or Maccabi Tel Aviv win

Dynamo Kyiv face a difficult mission in Lublin, as they must win by at least two goals after a 1-3 defeat away from home. The Ukrainians started well in Serbia, equalising at 1-1, but after Vivcharenko’s red card their game collapsed and the opponents capitalised on the numerical advantage. Coach Shovkovskyi is well aware that his team continue to struggle in Europe, having already dropped out of the Champions League and now at risk of falling into the Conference League. Dynamo have started strongly in their domestic league, but on the international stage defensive errors and inexperience are evident. Maccabi Tel Aviv, by contrast, showed great efficiency, with two goals from captain Peretz giving them an excellent position ahead of the second leg. The Israelis also come into the match on a run of four straight wins, with a balanced squad and strong confidence. Dynamo will look to Yarmolenko and young Vanat to put pressure on the opposition, but overall Maccabi appear closer to progression. Dynamo face a very tough evening if they want to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

Genk vs Lech Poznań (28.08.2025, 20:00 CET)

Tip: Genk win

Genk return home with a huge 5-1 lead from Poland and will look to complete the job comfortably. The Belgian side essentially decided the tie in the first half of the first leg, scoring four times and completely dominating play. Coach Thorsten Fink had been under criticism for an unconvincing domestic start, but his team have looked much more focused and effective in Europe. Genk’s weekend league match was postponed, leaving them with a fully rested squad ready to secure progression in front of their fans. Lech Poznań have endured a poor start to the season, not only suffering the heavy defeat to Genk but also struggling in their domestic league, with major problems in defence. Coach Frederiksen knows his side are fighting only for pride, as their chances of progression are virtually gone. The Polish team still have attacking quality in Ishak and Jagiełło, but their defensive weaknesses are being exploited repeatedly. Genk hold all the cards and are expected to seal progression with ease at home.

FC Utrecht vs Zrinjski Mostar (28.08.2025, 20:00 CET)

Tip: FC Utrecht win

Utrecht claimed a 2-0 win in Bosnia and will aim to complete the job in front of their home fans. The Dutch club are back on the European stage after five years and look in outstanding form – winning seven of their eight matches so far this season. Min and Jensen secured victory in the first leg and both scored again at the weekend in the league, underlining their importance in attack. Coach Ron Jans has an attacking machine at his disposal, which has already netted 23 goals, and his team are rightly expected to progress. Zrinjski, by contrast, are in poor form, losing not only to Utrecht but also in their domestic league, and they have failed to score in three consecutive matches. Coach Igor Stimac is trying to rally his squad, but in truth they generally struggle at this level of European competition. Bilbija is capable of deciding matches, but he barely had a look-in against Utrecht’s defence in the first leg. This looks like a clear home win and Utrecht’s first group stage appearance in 15 years.

Young Boys vs Slovan Bratislava (28.08.2025, 20:00 CET)

Tip: Young Boys win

Young Boys hold a 1-0 lead from Bratislava and are favourites to finish the job at the Wankdorf. The Swiss champions may not have started the season strongly, but their first-leg win and recent cup performances show they are finding form. Coach Contini will rely on striker Bedia, who scored the decisive goal last week, and on their home record, as Young Boys are unbeaten in 11 competitive matches at the Wankdorf. They also benefit from extra rest, as they did not play a league game at the weekend. Slovan Bratislava, meanwhile, travel fatigued and not in the best form – they drew with Michalovce in the league and have been struggling away from home. Weiss’s side do have European experience, but they have never beaten Young Boys and have lost four of the last five encounters between the clubs. They can look to Mak and Strelec for inspiration, but the task in Bern is daunting. Young Boys are traditionally strong at home and expected to progress comfortably.

FCSB vs Aberdeen (28.08.2025, 20:30 CET)

Tip: draw or FCSB win

The first leg ended 2-2, leaving everything to play for in Bucharest. Romanian giants FCSB had led 2-0 but after Cisotti’s red card they conceded twice and allowed their opponents to equalise. Coach Charalambous knows his side have defensive problems, with 12 goals conceded in seven league matches, and their home form is also poor – just one win in their last seven games at the Arena Națională. Aberdeen also have issues, losing four straight away games and rarely progressing deep in Europe. The Scottish side, however, showed attacking intent with 15 shots from inside the box in the first leg, which was a solid performance against FCSB. Thelin will rely on striker Yengi and wingers Milanovic and Keskinen, who could be dangerous again in the return match. FCSB arguably have greater squad quality, but their confidence is fragile and the pressure of playing at home could weigh heavily. A tight contest is expected, with a single moment potentially deciding it.

Braga vs Lincoln Red Imps (28.08.2025, 21:00 CET)

Tip: Braga win

Braga head into the second leg with a commanding 4-0 lead from Gibraltar, and progression already looks a formality. The Portuguese side are unbeaten this season, with six wins and three draws in nine competitive matches. Coach Vicens has a balanced squad capable of dominating both domestically and in Europe, with attacking trio Navarro, Horta and Zalazar among the best in Portugal. Braga are also strong at home, having won eight of their last ten matches at Estadio Municipal and continuing that trend this season. Lincoln Red Imps may dominate in Gibraltar, but on the European stage they looked out of their depth, barely creating a chance in the first leg. Coach Bezares will turn to De Barr and veteran Mandi, but hopes of a miracle are very slim. The visitors have not even started their domestic season, adding further uncertainty to their form. Braga are expected to control the match from the outset and secure their passage to the Europa League group stage with ease.
