English League Matchday 3 Preview (August 30–31, 2025) – 30.-31.8. 2025

Chelsea vs Fulham (23.08.2025, 13:30)

Tip: Chelsea win

Chelsea faced a real test of resilience against West Ham, when after losing Cole Palmer and conceding an early goal, they managed to turn the score around and eventually thrash their opponent 5-1. Enzo Maresca’s team looked very well organized, managed to utilize the squad depth, and distributed the goals among several players. A lot of attention was drawn to the historic moment when 18-year-old Estevao Willian recorded the youngest-ever assist for Chelsea in Premier League history. Chelsea also had a successful pre-season and entered the new campaign with great confidence. Fulham, on the other hand, drew with Manchester United and showed they can compete with a strong opponent, but their away defense remains a long-standing weakness. The Cottagers have failed to keep a clean sheet away from home in their last nine league matches, which is an alarming statistic before visiting Stamford Bridge. In addition, Fulham are heavily reliant on Rodrigo Muniz’s form, while Chelsea have far more attacking and midfield options. Even though Fulham shocked Chelsea last season, current form and home advantage clearly favor the Blues.

Manchester United vs Burnley (23.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Manchester United win

Manchester United are experiencing a complicated start to the season, further undermined by a shocking defeat in the EFL Cup against Grimsby, which has only increased the pressure on coach Ruben Amorim. Nevertheless, the Red Devils possess great attacking potential and players capable of deciding matches in a single moment. Burnley, as a newly promoted side, quickly recovered from a poor start and achieved two wins in a row, boosting their confidence. Scott Parker is trying to build on young players and summer signings, and his team has shown that they can be dangerous. However, against United they will need to focus on defense, as Old Trafford is always a difficult place to withstand pressure. Statistics speak clearly: United are consistently strong at home against promoted teams and rarely drop points. Although Burnley has fighting spirit and several promising attackers, the difference in quality is significant. United also need a victory to calm the atmosphere, and home support should help them get the job done.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Bournemouth (23.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Tottenham win

Tottenham under Thomas Frank got off to a perfect start this season, and especially the victory at Manchester City is a huge statement of strength. The team looks tactically very disciplined, with a solid defense and effective attacking play. Richarlison and Brennan Johnson have shown they can score even against top opponents. Spurs also have an excellent early-season record, with a chance to win three games in a row and stay top of the table. Bournemouth may have beaten Wolves, but they lack consistency and disappointed in the EFL Cup against Brentford. Their away record against London teams often ends in draws, but against such an in-form side it will be very difficult. The Cherries rely on Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson, but they may not be enough against Spurs’ well-organized defense. If the hosts repeat the intensity shown at the Etihad, the three points should remain in North London.

Sunderland vs Brentford (23.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Brentford win

Sunderland are still looking for balance after their return to the Premier League, but defeats to Burnley and Huddersfield in the EFL Cup highlighted their weaknesses. Their defense is weakened by injuries, and the absence of Daniel Ballard is particularly significant. Nevertheless, the Black Cats have energy and passionate home support, which could play a role. Brentford, however, have been consistently strong away from home, collecting more points on their travels in 2025 than most teams. New coach Keith Andrews has brought organization and the ability to punish mistakes quickly. Victories over Aston Villa and Bournemouth show that the Bees can also succeed against strong opponents. History is also in their favor – Brentford have a strong winning record against promoted sides. Sunderland’s only hope lies in extraordinary attacking efficiency, otherwise Brentford are clear favorites.

Wolves vs Everton (23.08.2025, 16:00)

Tip: Everton or draw

Wolves started the season with two defeats and had to wait for the EFL Cup to finally manage a turnaround win over West Ham. The departures of key players like Cunha and Aït-Nouri weakened the squad, although they still retain quality in attack thanks to Strand Larsen. Everton, on the other hand, have undergone a big transformation, and new signings led by Jack Grealish have added spark. Two home wins demonstrated that the Toffees can play attractive football and continue their good run from last season. Away from home they are traditionally less dangerous, though their defense has improved. Wolves enjoy the advantage of home support, but a long run of poor results and a weak start could weigh heavily. Everton look mentally stronger and more confident, which might prove decisive. If they remain focused, they have a realistic chance to win at Molineux as well.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United (23.08.2025, 18:30)

Tip: Newcastle win

Leeds started brightly with a win over Everton but quickly came back to reality – a heavy defeat to Arsenal and elimination in the EFL Cup against Sheffield Wednesday exposed their limitations. Daniel Farke is dealing with injuries to key players and his side have struggled to convert chances effectively. Their unbeaten home run at Elland Road is impressive, but the Premier League is on another level compared to the Championship. Newcastle, despite a tough defeat to Liverpool, showed fight and quality even without some of their stars. Eddie Howe knows how to prepare his team for big games, and Newcastle have a stronger squad than Leeds. History also favors the visitors, who consistently take points against newly promoted clubs. Leeds may rely on home support, but current form works against them. Newcastle should be able to confirm their superiority.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester City (24.08.2025, 15:00)

Tip: Manchester City win

Brighton have made a poor start to the season – a draw with Fulham and defeat to Everton revealed that Fabian Hürzeler’s side are still searching for optimal form. Their defense looks shaky, and the absence of several injured players is a big handicap. Manchester City, meanwhile, saw their winning streak ended by Tottenham, which was an unpleasant shock for Guardiola. However, City possess immense quality and are known for responding immediately to setbacks. Haaland, De Bruyne and Foden provide massive attacking power that Brighton will find very difficult to contain. Moreover, City have been keeping clean sheets away from home and are close to breaking a historical record. Brighton may have performed well against City last year, but current form doesn’t suggest a repeat. The visitors will be highly motivated and should claim victory at the Amex Stadium.

Nottingham Forest vs West Ham United (24.08.2025, 15:00)

Tip: Nottingham Forest win

Forest made a solid start to the season, with a draw at Crystal Palace away representing a respectable result. Nuno Espirito Santo has stabilized the team, and they are consistently strong at home, regularly collecting points at the City Ground. West Ham, by contrast, are in crisis – heavy defeats to Sunderland and Chelsea followed by EFL Cup elimination have further worsened the atmosphere. Graham Potter has yet to find the right lineup, and the Hammers’ defense looks fragile. The statistics are alarming for the visitors, marking their worst Premier League start in years. Moreover, they have a dreadful record against Nottingham and haven’t won at the City Ground for more than two decades. Forest boast a cohesive squad and the power of home support. In current form, the home side are clear favorites.

Liverpool vs Arsenal (24.08.2025, 17:30)

Tip: Liverpool or draw

Liverpool showed tremendous character against Newcastle, coming from behind and even in numerical disadvantage managing to snatch a stoppage-time victory. Arne Slot’s team displays enormous attacking power, although defensive weaknesses are still visible. Salah, Szoboszlai and others form a deadly attack capable of deciding games in crucial moments. Arsenal, by contrast, have a stronger defense and against Leeds proved they can also be effective going forward. Injuries are a major issue though – Saka and Havertz will both miss out, reducing their creativity. History also works against them, as Arsenal haven’t won at Anfield in over ten years. Liverpool can also equal a club record for consecutive scoring matches. This will be a tight contest, but the Anfield factor could be decisive.

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace (24.08.2025, 20:00)

Tip: Aston Villa or draw

Aston Villa have struggled to convert chances and after two rounds have only one point. Emery’s team, however, boast a long unbeaten run at home, where they last lost more than a year ago. Their attacking play relies heavily on Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby, who need to improve their finishing. Crystal Palace under Oliver Glasner look very stable, maintaining their unbeaten run and qualifying for the group stage of the Conference League. The Eagles’ defense is solid, and their attack, led by Ismaila Sarr, is quick and dangerous. Last season Palace got the better of Villa in direct encounters, even managing a convincing win. Still, Villa’s home form remains a strong advantage. It promises to be a tight game, but the home crowd could tip the balance in Villa’s favor.
